Expect Great Things with Great Jobs at Kohl's!

Kohl’s opening 37 stores; 30 in California

Kohl’s Department Stores is preparing for the Sept. 30 grand opening of 37 stores, including 30 in California.

The store openings will create more than 5,200 jobs across six states, the Menomonee Falls-based retailer (NYSE: KSS) said.

Among the 37 stores opening, 35 are former Mervyn’s locations, 30 of which are in California. With the addition of these stores, Kohl’s will have 121 California locations.

All the new stores in California, Nevada, Texas and Utah are former Mervyn’s locations. Kohl’s acquired the locations from Mervyn’s LLC, which liquidated under bankruptcy.

In addition to the new California locations, Kohl’s is opening stores in Florida, Louisiana, Nevada, Texas and Utah.

During spring 2009, Kohl’s opened 19 stores, including its first Alaska location. In total, Kohl’s opened 56 stores in 2009, and as of Sept. 30 will operate 1,059 stores in 49 states. Kohl’s is also remodeling 51 locations nationwide this year.

“We have used our financial strength during this downturn to expand in key markets, such as California, as well as invest in our existing store base in order to gain market share at a time when customers are looking for value more than ever,” said Kohl’s chairman, CEO and president Kevin Mansell.

Despite recession, Kohl's expands in Las Vegas

The Business Journal of Milwaukee - by Rich Kirchen

Kohl’s Department Stores is preparing to expand in Las Vegas, one of the metro areas hit hardest by the current recession.

The Menomonee Falls-based retailer (NYSE: KSS) has been interviewing prospective employees for three new stores in a community with above-average unemployment. The stores are scheduled to open this month.

The new Las Vegas stores are among 35 former Mervyn’s locations that Kohl’s is opening this fall. Kohl’s acquired the locations from Mervyn’s LLC, which liquidated under bankruptcy. Most of the stores are in California.

Kohl’s already has five stores in the Las Vegas area and the retailer’s executives didn’t want to pass up the opportunity to grow in what until recently was one of the most rapidly growing communities in the nation.

“We feel that these locations are hard to duplicate and provide opportunities to be more convenient to our customers,” said Kohl’s spokeswoman Vicki Shamion. “Furthermore, Kohl’s offers customers high quality merchandise at a great value. We believe that Las Vegas shoppers looking to stretch their budgets will find the brands and current fashions they want.”

Kohl’s executives understand the very competitive and challenging economic environment right now, and they do not expect near term change, Shamion said.

The company’s executives believe customers are responding to Kohl’s “value” positioning. For example, despite the difficult economic conditions in California, that state and the Southwest led the company in comparable-store sales during the second quarter, Shamion said.

“In this environment, we remain focused on gaining market share and will continue to expand when and where it makes sense,” she sai

Kohl’s gives scholarships to more than 2,000 children

Kohl’s Department Stores honored more than 2,000 kids nationwide for the good deeds they performed in their communities through volunteerism as part of the Kohl’s Kids Who Care Scholarship Program. Ninety-five youth from Florida will receive $50 gift cards and recognition certificates from Kohl’s for making a difference in their communities.

The winners have qualified for the chance to receive a $1,000 regional scholarship for post-secondary education that Kohl’s will award in July. Of the regional winners, Kohl’s will then award 10 national winners an additional $5,000 scholarship for their outstanding service and donate $1,000 to a nonprofit organization of the national winners’ choice. In total, Kohl’s plans to award more than $350,000 in scholarships and prizes this summer.

Since its inception in 2001, the Kohl’s Kids Who Care Scholarship Program has given more than $1.8 million in scholarships and prizes to recognize and reward young volunteers. The Kohl’s Kids Who Care Scholarship Program is part of Kohl’s Cares for Kids, Kohl’s philanthropic program which is focused on improving the lives of children. Kohl’s Cares for Kids benefits children’s health and education initiatives nationwide through its merchandise program featuring books and plush toys, a children’s hospital program, fundraising gift cards and the A-Team associate volunteer program.
